Just offshore in the shallow waters are all kinds of colorful fish and some interesting sponges. While this area is okay for swimming, it is, however, a hot spot for snorkeling. You'll know you are in the right spot when you see the cannons at the back of the beach. This small beach is set between mangroves with a few palm trees farther back in the sand. The park has several beaches, the most popular being Cannon Beach. The view out from the beach is spectacular, with an uninterrupted view of the horizon.Īddress: 36850 Overseas Hwy, Big Pine Key, FloridaĢ. The best time to visit is at low tide when the water recedes and the beach grows dramatically in size. It's an ideal place for wading and lazing about. Loggerhead Beach is much larger and has a wonderful sandy bottom that extends a long way out into the ocean. Just back from the sand, you'll find a concession stand, picnic tables, restrooms, and plenty of parking. The water here is shallow, and the beach is set in a pleasant cove. Of the two, Calusa Beach is the more famous and the one you frequently see in the foreground of photographs of the historic Old Seven Mile Bridge. The park's two other beaches, Loggerhead and Calusa, were largely unaffected by the storm. It's worth noting, however, that in 2017 Hurricane Irma devastated the beach and campground, and while much of it has since reopened, some areas may still be undergoing rehabilitation. Of the three beaches in the park, the most popular is Sandspur Beach, a mile-long stretch of natural sand that features shallow water that extends out an incredible distance into the ocean.ĭuring low tide, small sand islands appear enabling you to enjoy your very own desert island experience. The same is true of Key West's resorts, though their beaches are generally smaller and manmade with imported sand. ![]() While a beach visit in this part of Florida should be something you do as part of a broader trip, some of the best resorts in the Keys do in fact have their own private beaches for when the urge to sunbathe or swim strikes. And while seagrass does sometimes wash up on or gather near the shoreline, venture a little further out to the offshore reefs and you'll find some of the best snorkeling and diving conditions in the USA. Why are the beaches here so unique? For starters, the Florida Keys are coral islands and as such are protected by offshore reefs that prevent the wave action needed to create large beaches. Yet while many of the beaches here are smaller, have fewer waves, and are narrower than their mainland counterparts, their warm, shallow, turquoise-colored waters make for a great beach vacation. The 125-mile-long string of islands that make up the Florida Keys are well known for their tropical feel.
